Navigation

Whether this is your first experience of map work & navigation or you just need to polish up your skills for your Mountain Leader training or assessment, We offer a systematic and progressive approach to finding your way around using a map, compass and natural land features. This will open up endless possibilities for independent hill walking with increased confidence. Your navigation course will always be tailored to suit your own requirements with assessment of your current skills level, giving guidance to improve technique through structured and progressive learning.

Micro Navigation

Once you have the basic skills for navigation you will then want to progress your skills to micro navigation. This course will teach you how to navigate at night or in adverse weather conditions. We will look at estimation of distance travelled by timing, aspect of slope, pacing and height climbed. (As in Naismith's rule) We will also look at navigational errors people make when in the mountains and learn use your new skills for problem solving.

Leadership & Group Management

Taking responsibility for yourself is one thing, being responsible for others is something entirely different. In particular we will look at the practical skills and techniques required when leading groups hill walking and camping in the mountains of the UK. This will include route finding. How to find the right balance between what seems dangerous, and therefore exciting, and what is safe and perhaps dull. We will look at risk assessments, leadership attitude and approaches, decision making, observation, weather, camping skills, emergency evacuations, supervision on steep ground, emergency uses of the rope and any equipment required. We will also take a look at first aid in a mountain environment.

First Aid

The first aid courses Hotrocks offer include basic first aid training, right up to advance first aid. We can cater each of these courses to suit your individual and group needs. Under our guidance you will learn to deliver the correct first aid treatment in various and challenging situations, enabling you to be confident and focused when applying first aid.

We can also provide courses in the following advanced techniques:

  • Spinal management
  • Oxygen Therapy
  • Defibrillation Training

Our courses can be run on a 1 day introduction right up to a 4 day advanced, please specify your requirements when booking.
